What is a parallelogram jointer? What is the difference between it and a wedge/traditional jointer?
The traditional jointer bed is attached to the body of the jointer via an angled dovetail. Thus as you move the beds down, the beds move further away from the cutting head. As you raise the beds, the beds move closer to the cutting head.
Parallelogram beds are mounted on a parallelogram so as you move the beds down or up the distance between the bed and the cutter head remains constant. This keeps clearance to a minimum for a better finish.
8 Inch Jointer with a one-piece welded cabinet base
The same welded one-piece cabinet base supports the jointer securely on the floor allowing for larger pieces to be pushed through the unit. The cabinet has a single 4in integral dust port for efficient waste extraction and it houses the powerful 3HP induction motor that drives the cutterheads.
The double tapered belt design is gone and in its place is a single wide poly-ribbed V-belt. These belts have better power transfer to the cutterheads, longer service life and allow for precision balanced alloy pulleys to be fitted - reducing inertia and improving smoother, quieter operation.
Japanese SKF Bearings on a low-friction spiral cutterhead
The cutterheads are now supported by large Japanese SKF bearings, again for smoother, quieter operation with lower friction - improving service life and performance. Due to the increased cutterhead diameter, it has allowed a better design of helical spiral head to be developed for better performance. Featuring 6 spirals and 52 knives this unit will not get bogged down by even the hardest of Australia Eyucalpts.
The bed itself and matching bedway on the tables are precision-machined multiple times over a number of days to allow the cast iron to settle and stabilize, then once assembled - the tables are again machined and polished over days for the same reason - so that each jointer bed has perfectly matched in-feed and out-feed tables. With a 1.95m length, this jointer will comfortably straighten work pieces up to 4m long.
Higher, longer, solid fences with foldable handwheels
The design of this jointer features a longer in-feed fence. Many other brands seem to feature a longer out-feed fence, which makes little sense as once the work piece is beyond the cutter, a longer fence helps less and less. So Sherwood has an exclusive extended fence on the in-feed side. This allows for greater accuracy with longer work pieces.
It has a fence higher than most 8in/200mm jointers for better work piece support when planing edges, sitting on a solid cast-iron bracket that is bolted to the main bed . The rack and pinion adjustment is easy to operate and adjust and once locked in place is solid as a rock. The fence can be tilted up to 45° to plane bevelled edges with an integral stop built in for 45° and 90° for quick and easy adjustment.
The switch also remains on its mounting arm so if both of your hands are full, you should be able to knock it with your elbow easily enough to turn it off.
