Paint settles, but you don’t have to!
Even your brand-new can will have settled a little bit by the time you get it home. So every time you open a can, you do need to stir the contents because the pigment and solids will be more concentrated near the bottom. Shaking the can is OK, but it’s really only practical for smaller amounts (unless you have arms like Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime, and then by all means, shake away!).
