Matte & Neon Mica Powders

Matte neon mica powders are used as decorative pigments to add vivid colour to compatible epoxy resin and other suitable creative media. In woodworking, common applications include resin inlays, river tables, filled cracks and knots, serving boards, decorative panels and resin-and-timber turning blanks. Their strong colours are particularly useful when a bold contrast with natural timber is desired.

The ideal quantity depends on the pigment, resin volume and desired opacity, so there is no single mixing ratio suitable for every project. Start with a modest amount, mix thoroughly and add more gradually if a stronger colour is required. Do not exceed the epoxy manufacturer's recommended additive limits. For larger projects, recording the weight of pigment and resin used in a successful test batch makes the colour easier to reproduce.

Yes. Mixing neon pigment into a suitable epoxy can create highly visible decorative fills for cracks, knots, voids and routed details. Clean and prepare the cavity according to the epoxy manufacturer's recommendations before pouring. Open cracks may also need to be sealed underneath to prevent leakage, and deeper voids require an epoxy formulated for the intended casting depth.

Different compatible pigment colours can be blended to create custom shades, or mixed into separate batches of epoxy and poured together for contrasting effects. When creating swirls or marbling, avoid completely blending the separate colours if you want them to remain visually distinct. Small test batches are useful because the colour of dry powder can differ from its appearance once dispersed through cured resin.

Suitable fully cured epoxy can generally be sanded and finished according to the resin manufacturer's recommendations. Sanding will initially leave the surface looking dull or cloudy because of fine scratches, but progressing through suitable abrasives and polishing or applying an appropriate final finish can restore the intended appearance. Where pigment is dispersed throughout the resin, the colour remains within the casting rather than existing only on its surface.

Fine powders can become airborne when containers are opened or pigment is poured, so work carefully and avoid creating dust. Follow the pigment manufacturer's safety information and use the recommended personal protective equipment. Epoxy resin and hardener also require appropriate handling, gloves and working conditions, so the safety instructions for the complete resin system should be followed throughout mixing, pouring and curing.
