Japanese saws have earned plenty of fans among woodworkers, and for good reason. Their thin blades, narrow kerfs and pull-stroke action can make cutting feel remarkably controlled and efficient. But there’s more going on with a modern Razorsaw than simply following the traditional Japanese approach.

Made by Gyokucho, one of Japan’s leading saw manufacturers, Razorsaw combines the fundamentals of the Japanese pull saw with some very precise modern manufacturing. From individually hardened teeth to ultra-thin nickel coatings, quite a bit of technology goes into what, at first glance, looks like a fairly simple hand tool.

The Secret Is in the Teeth

Gyokucho pioneered manufacturing processes for stamping and flattening saw blades as well as grinding, setting and impulse hardening the teeth. Rather than simply hardening the entire blade to the same degree, the cutting teeth receive highly localised treatment.

The very tip of each tooth is exposed to a frequency of 27.12 MHz for just 3–5 milliseconds. This rapid treatment hardens the tooth tip to approximately 67–72  on the Rockwell hardness scale.

Why go to all that trouble? A very hard cutting edge stays sharp and withstands wear, but making the entire blade equally hard would also make it more brittle. Razorsaw instead retains a comparatively softer, more flexible core while concentrating the hardness where it’s actually needed.

The result is a blade designed to combine very hard, durable cutting edges with the toughness and flexibility needed to resist breakage. It’s one of those manufacturing details you probably won’t notice when you first pick up the saw — but you certainly notice the resulting sharpness when you start cutting.

A Blade Designed to Stay Clean and Cut Smoothly

Razorsaw also pays close attention to the surface of the blade itself. Selected blades receive a micro-thin nickel coating using a chemical plating process rather than conventional electroplating. Because an electrical current isn’t used, the nickel can be deposited very evenly across the blade.

The obvious advantage is corrosion resistance, particularly when tools are being used or stored in humid or coastal environments. But there’s another practical benefit for anyone cutting resinous timber. The extremely smooth surface helps reduce the adhesion of tree resin and makes any build-up that does occur easier to clean away with warm water.

There’s even a handy side benefit: the smooth, reflective blade surface can be used as a visual reference when aligning a cut.


Replace the Blade, Not the Whole Saw

There is a trade-off to those extremely hard impulse-hardened teeth: they aren’t intended for conventional resharpening. Sharpening any saw properly takes skill, and the fine tooth geometry of a Japanese crosscut saw can make the job particularly fiddly.

That’s why Razorsaw hand saws use replaceable blades. When the teeth eventually wear out or the blade becomes damaged, you keep the handle and fit a new blade rather than replacing the complete saw.

There’s More Thought in the Handle Than You Might Expect

Razorsaw handles vary depending on the saw and its intended use. Traditional rattan-wrapped handles provide grip while leaving tiny spaces between the hand and handle, helping with perspiration and slippage. Modern TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) grips offer a soft, rubber-like surface and feature the traditional Japanese seigaiha wave pattern.

There are also lightweight EVA grips designed to reduce strain on the wrist, along with timber handles made from materials including beech, magnolia, cherry, oak and laminated maple.

Different approaches, but with the same basic goal: keeping a thin, sharp saw comfortable and controllable in the hand.

Traditional Idea, Modern Saw

The basic principle behind a Japanese pull saw is wonderfully straightforward: put a thin blade under tension rather than compression and you can make an efficient, precise cutting tool.

What Razorsaw has done is take that principle and apply modern manufacturing to it. Precision-ground teeth, individual impulse hardening, specialist surface treatments and replaceable blades all contribute to a saw that might look simple, but has a surprising amount of engineering hiding behind those seriously sharp teeth.
