The core of the 1281 is a precisely machined square milled from cast and ground tool plate – the most stable aluminium in the world. The stability of the material and the methods used to machine the core allow it to hold tolerance to ±.0085°…that’s within one thousandth of an inch at the far end of the blade.

To this highly accurate core, we add cheeks to make the base thicker. The combination of the one-piece core with the precision-pinned cheeks can’t be matched by squares made with a blade riveted to a separate beam. The cheeks are narrower than the core by a quarter-inch, forming a shoulder not found in traditional square designs. The shoulder allows the square to rest on the edge of a board without you holding on. Once you’ve used a Woodpeckers square with the shoulder, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it. 

The hands-free design, the wide stable base for vertical use and the heft and balance of the 1281 combine to make the tool a joy to use, as well as deadly accurate. The laser engraved scales on both sides of the blade are accurate to ±.004in total accumulated error over the entire length of the scale.
