While this lathe falls into the midi lathe category, its short bed belies what is actually the best lathe under $1k in Australia now. That's a big call and we stick by it. The spec's on their own sound good but seeing this lathe in action is when you understand how well-built it is, which will mean a lifetime or enjoyable lathe use. While the spec's compared to say the MC-1100-B in the range make it seem like a smaller unit, for most woodturners it will easily do the work it is designed for in a lathe that you would expect to cost 2-3 or more times than this price.
The 1HP DC motor goes to the electronic variable speed control box, located at the tailstock end to keep the electronics away from the dust generated at the headstock end. It has a reverse function if necessary to get something unstuck from the headstock with a clever cut-out so once its put in reverse and you change direction back it will not turn back on for a couple of minutes, preventing any potential mishaps.
The bed section itself is actually a bigger and heavier cross-section than all MC series (except the MCVF-1847) and the tool rest holder is full sized 1in with industry-standard thread and morse taper sizes.
An absolute pleasure to use we would highly recommend this unit to anyone looking for an entry-level lathe doing all spindle and most standard-size bowl work.
Now also available is a stand to suit the lathe which is produced from thick steel square tube for durability with in-built height adjustment to suit people of all heights, a bed extension which increases spindle capacity by 670mm, plus a stand extension to suit the bed extension.
