Sherwood's Router Table Coping Sled
The Sherwood Deluxe Coping Sled is the router table accessory you need to make rail & style doors, tenons, lap joints and any other tricky end grain cuts. It has been engineered to provide the very best in control, safety and repeatability. While there are many instructions available online for creating a home-made coping sled, this sled will easily outperform home-made jigs and is the perfect companion for the Sherwood or any other router tables with a standard 19.0 x 9.5mm (3/4 x 3/8in) mitre slot.
How to use the Deluxe Router Coping Sled
The Deluxe Coping Sled uses two techniques to secure the your work piece. First it traps the board between the adjustable front plate and the fence. The slotted front plate is easily adjusted for material up to 140mm wide. Trapping the board this way prevents the router bit from spinning the board. Controlling this rotational force is the most important part of accurately shaping end grain.
Second, two clamps hold the piece down to prevent lifting. However, very little clamping pressure is needed because the board is trapped between the fence and front plate. The two clamp knobs are part of the clamp beam which is adjustable so it can easily be set to the center of the board.
Three handles are used to lock the clamp beam in place securely. Their location is always directly above the clamping force and well away from the router bit and the two massive grab handles are well located to easily control the sled but keep your hands far away from the spinning bits.
Another important feature is the clear guide. The primary purpose of the guide is to allow the sled to track along the fence rather than the mitre slot. This approach is faster and easier to setup and eliminates the need to align your router fence perfectly parallel to the miter slot. It also eliminates the need for having a miter slot in your router table. However tracking the sled in the slot in conjunction with the integral work piece stop built into the rear fence can ensure repeatable cut lengths up to 300mm from the bit.
All components are produced from aircraft-grade aluminium, phenolic, steel or rubberised plastic and this sled is designed to perform a lifetime of use and abuse in any workshop environment.
