A few changes under the bonnet have seen the new Sherwood 8in Jointer's performance improve greatly, to the point where it now thoroughly competes with the best jointers on the market at a price-point far more competitive than even its lesser rivals. That's not to say it was a slouch before as it came with the same Sherwood Five-Year Warranty you get now. performance improve greatly.

8 Inch Jointer with a one-piece welded cabinet base

The same welded one-piece cabinet base supports the jointer securely on the floor now that the mobile wheel kit has been removed. The wheel kit had a negative effect on stability and with a jointer like this, stability is key to smooth operation. The cabinet still has the single 4in integral dust port for efficient waste extraction and it houses the powerful 2HP induction motor that drives the cutterhead.

The double tapered belt design is gone and in its place is a single wide poly-ribbed V-belt. These belts have better power transfer to the cutterhead, longer service life and allow for precision balanced alloy pulleys to be fitted - reducing inertia and improving smoother, quieter operation.

Japanese SKF Bearings on a low-friction, re-designed straight blade or helical path spiral cutterhead

The cutterhead is now supported by large Japanese SKF bearings, again for smoother, quieter operation with lower friction - improving service life and performance. The straight blade cutterhead itself has been redesigned, increasing in diameter with four blades now installed - meaning more cuts per minute with better overall balance due to the symmetrical blade location. Due to the increased cutterhead diameter, it has allowed a better design of helical spiral head to be developed for better performance, regardless of the type of cutterhead fitted.

The jointer is still the same classic wedge-bed design that has been in service for decades and is still used by all the major brands of jointers of this size because of its dependability. The bed itself and matching bedway on the tables are precision-machined multiple times over a number of days to allow the cast iron to settle and stabilize, then once assembled - the tables are again machined and polished over days for the same reason - so that each jointer bed has perfectly matched in-feed and out-feed tables. With a 1.8m length, this jointer will comfortably straighten work pieces up to 3.6m long.

Higher, longer, solid fences with foldable handwheels

The new design of this jointer features a longer in-feed fence. Many other brands seem to feature a longer out-feed fence, which makes little sense as once the work piece is beyond the cutter, a longer fence helps less and less. So we have decided to ask the manufacturer to extend the in-feed side of the fence. This allows for greater accuracy with longer work pieces.

The handwheels are now located at the front of the machine with foldable handles so you don't catch clothing on them when not in use. With handwheels located at the front, it is easier to adjust both tables by gaining greater access to the adjustment than having to reach under the table.

The fence was the major update on the previous model and continues unchanged. It has a fence higher than most 8in/200mm jointers for better work piece support when planing edges, sitting on a solid cast-iron bracket that is bolted to the main bed . The rack and pinion adjustment is easy to operate and adjust and once locked in place is solid as a rock. The fence can be tilted up to 45° to plane bevelled edges with an integral stop built in for 45° and 90° for quick and easy adjustment. 

The switch also remains on its mounting arm so if both of your hands are full, you should be able to knock it with your elbow easily enough to turn it off.
