This machine packs a big punch in a small footprint - the design was originally developed for Delta in the US - and it's been in production now for decades, making it a very capable performer.
This was previously sold as a workshop unit - on a cabinet stand with cast-iron feed tables, but due to the similar pricing of that unit to the Sherwood 16in Thicknesser and the 16in unit's superior design as a workshop thicknesser, Sherwood have revised this model to play to its strengths.
Why a Sherwood thicknesser?
The main difference between this unit and the industrial thicknessers is that rather than having a fixed head, the cutterhead assembly is adjusted to the the correct height.
This also means the motor must be part of the cutterhead assembly - similar to portable, benchtop thicknessers. Without the stand and feed tables, it means that this thicknesser is taking up a relatively small space - so if you are space constrained for storage, you can buy this unit and configure it on a stand or into a workshop design that is small on space but big on requirements.

Which thicknesser should I choose?
Its drawback compared with the 16in unit is also this unit's strength - you lose nothing in the important features that will allow you to perform heavy-duty planing work.
The only major drawback in use with this model compared to the industrial thicknessers is that due to the weight of the cutterhead and motor being the movable part of the thicknesser, winding down is very easy (with the help of gravity) but winding the head back up requires some effort.
If necessary, you can also purchase the original cast iron feed table set (as shown optionally mounted in the images) as well as the cabinet stand separately if you require these either at the time of purchase of the unit or as a later upgrade.
Like all Sherwood planers (thicknessers AND jointers) you are covered by the Sherwood Five-Year Warranty as this machine has been specified with all the features you need but can't see under the bonnet. All tolerances are specifically checked, tested and signed off prior to shipping. All bearings have been upgraded to Japanese SKF bearings for smoother, quieter, long-life operation among other Sherwood-specific requirements.
