13in Deluxe Thicknesser

Sherwood's 13 Inch Thicknesser is first globally under $1,000 with Tungsten Carbide knives

It's a new level of portable planing. It's a little hard for us not to get sucked into marketing buzzwords like that when it comes to Sherwood's thicknesser range because everyone in our workshop are massive fans of the spiral cutterheads in these units and adding tungsten carbide knives has just pushed them over the edge. But, we'll just stick to the facts and let you make your own decision.

So, the fundamental upgrade to this unit is the segmented spiral cutterhead. Unlike other segmented spiral head units on the market in the sub-$1,000 category, the Sherwood unit is the first to be fitted with solid tungsten knives as standard.  To find out why we love these so much from people who aren't related to Timbecon in any way, you can watch a genuine review video of how much our customers love it in that link there, or you can read woodworking reviewer Sumo's Projects' review below.

Why would you buy this 13in (330mm) Deluxe Thicknesser?

Like the difference between high-speed steel and tungsten carbide tipped router bits, the knives found in this unit offer improved cutting performance improvement and most importantly, much longer cutting times before becoming blunt, reducing the running costs of this unit significantly over the lifetime of the machine.

The segmented spiral head uses a 27mm-wide knife (not the standard 14-15mm width knives found in other units) meaning that each tip is passing over more of the material, leaving a smoother finish and not working as hard. This also creates improved cuts and extended working times before becoming blunt.

This, in partnership with the 2HP motor, creates a very efficient thicknesser design, which means the motor is running under very little to no stress. This not only naturally increases the lifespan of the motor and all working parts of the machine, but it reduces the noise considerably - this machine is very quiet for a thicknesser - and reduces the build up of heat, which in turn further prolongs the lifespan of the blades, the accuracy of the shear cut, the smoothness of the finish, and so on.

Why the new thicknesser case design and general look?

This machine is mechanically identical to the original MB-1935 model but with an improved side and top cover, which has now integrated rollers into the top to pass material back over when in use, giving this model more protection and presence. The fit and finish across the machine has been upgraded, alongside all Sherwood models, consistently over the past few years.

As they're now competing largely with the premium American and European machinery brands, the Aussie company has put a huge amount of effort into the aesthetics of their machinery, with high-quality paintwork and a large amount of detail in the relative finishes, handles and accessories across the thicknesser range.

Thicknesser 13in 330mm Deluxe Spiral Head Features

    • A solid granite base instead of a stainless sheet over an alloy base. This improves the weight in the base of the machine, absorbing vibration and making it more stable in use as well as maintaining consistent flatness for the lifetime of the machine regardless of external influences (such as damage, scratching etc.).
    • A built-in depth-of-cut stop - set the depth of cut to the common 3.2mm, 6.4mm, 12.7mm, 19.0mm, 25.4mm and 31.8mm thicknesses so that when making the final pass on a number of work pieces they maintain a consistent thickness.
    • Bigger infeed and outfeed tables to support the work piece more effectively.
    • Cutterhead parallelism maintained by four precision ground steel posts
    • In-built dust chute and dust port with unique three sizes built into one outlet
    • Easy-to-access and change brushes
    • Built-in depth-of-cut gauge to ensure you're taking off the correct amount in each pass

Which thicknesser is right for you?

This is the interesting part. The knives on this machine, while TCT, are arranged in a straight pattern and not the helical spiral head design often found in larger machines - but also, uniquely to Sherwood, offered in their Helical Spiral Head Thicknesser you can see in the 'Customer's Also Purchased' section below.

Helical spiral head knives are designed to shear cut the work piece rather than planing the full width at the same time. It requires less horsepower, makes smaller chips and less noise than standard full-width blade types of standard cutterheads. Unlike conventional straight blade planers you do not need to replace the knife if it becomes damaged or dull. Instead, if one knife edge is damaged or has become blunt simply turn it to another edge in seconds. You will only need to replace the inserts when the two edges are dull giving you more life than the standard knives.

So, effectively, given the suite of benefits you get with TCT, you can see that helical spiral cutterheads basically just add to the equation. This thicknesser isn't a budget model, but neither is it approaching the top of the range of Sherwood's thicknessers, it fits nicely in the middle. If your planning on planing figured and difficult grains, then we recommend the helical path because that's what we use in our workshop and it makes the job an absolute breeze.

Ultimately, you should realise that the TCT cutters already do a fantastic job for the majority of cases though. But that's the tradeoff, given the modest of amount of additional expenditure required to add the helical path cutters, it can be a tough decision. We recommend having a good look at your options and calling us (where you'll always speak to real woodworkers) if you have specific, detailed questions about your projects. We're always happy to hear from you.

    Sherwood 13in Deluxe Thicknesser Reviews

    Sumo's Projects

"This is a very, very good machine and welcome addition to the shop. The performance on this is astronomical. It's a pretty good capacity, the height gauge is both metric and imperial, a solid granite base infeed and outfeed table instead of a stainless steel over an alloy base improves the weight and the stability of the machine, reducing vibration. A fantastic feature is the stop gauge, which you can set to desired thicknesses. It's a very sturdy construction, perhaps heavier than others on the market, but the granite base isn't subject to any movement or rust and it maintains consistent flatness."
